YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon – After a week seeing the military sideline President Robert Mugabe, the Catholic bishops in Zimbabwe say they are concerned about the future of the country, and have called on all the stakeholders, particularly the future leadership, to think about the best interests of the country.

2. On Sunday, the top brass of the ruling ZANU-PF party sacked Mugabe as the party’s leader, and appointed his vice president, Emerson Mnangagwa – the man Mugabe sacked two weeks ago to clear the way for his wife, Grace, to succeed him as president.

3. Noting that many people see the deteriorating economic situation in Zimbabwe and the accompanying myriad of social challenges as the cause of the current crisis, the Church leaders say those are just “symptoms of a deeper disease that has affected the nation for a long time.

1. We propose a Catholic politics of mercy as an alternative way of life — one as comprehensive as neoliberalism, but directed toward solidarity, not market calculation.

2. It’s consistent with the basic orientation of the spiritual works of mercy to point out global phenomena like proliferation of slums, or domestic phenomena like mass incarceration, to people who aren’t aware of them.

3. The book, titled Send Lazarus: Capitalism, Catholicism, and the Politics of Mercy, is currently under consideration for publication in 2019 by Fordham University Press.

Could Zimbabwe be on brink of a transformative ‘Catholic moment’?

2. She has daughters in Grades 3 and 1 in French immersion at St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School and was one of many parents who had fought the plan and attended the packed board meeting Tuesday night.
